Preface ‘Indian contemporary art’
We are happy to present to you the exhibition ‘Indian contemporary art’ which has been in preparation for the last two years by Gate foundation Amsterdam.

This exhibition is designed to introduce Indian contemporary art in Europe and especially in The Netherlands.
Up to now there has been paid litle attention to the modern art of ‘non-western’ countries, although there are hopeful signs in other directions.

Gate foundation stimulates and promotes the communication between Asian and European modern art. The presentation of four Indian artists, from several art disciplines, through a catalogue which is designed by two Dutch graphic designers, will contribute to the achievement of this aim.

The writers are from different backgrounds. Josef James is an art critic living and working in Madras.
He was editor of Artrends, a magazine about modern art in Madras and writes for several newspapers, magazines and other publications.

Sankaran Harikrishnan is an Indian writer living in The Hague, The Netherlands.
Next to his writing he is adviser on Indian modern art for CODA, Council of Dutch Artist Printers in Utrecht and other organizations.
Els van der Plas is an arthistorian and initiator of Gate foundation.
She already published several articles about Asian modern artin relation to European contemporary art developments.
This combination of people and qualities makes the concept of the exhibition and the publication
Finally we wish to express our sincere appreciation to all those in the Netherlands and India who have devoted their efforts to the realization of this project and hope that this exhibition will be a success.
On behalf of the board of Gate foundation
